Bryan Orthel is an associate professor, teaching courses addressing interior design as a historically and socially contextualized profession.  His interdisciplinary background and professional experience shape his interest in the breadth of problems.  His scholarship focuses on the ways people understand and use history in ordinary living (historical consciousness), as well as the teaching and learning of design.  Prior to joining IU, he worked for a small commercial design firm, consulted with a state historic preservation office, and taught interdisciplinary design courses blending design, history, and theory.
