Indiana University is recognizing eight faculty members and one doctoral student this semester for their demonstrated excellence in teaching and service.
The 2026 University Teaching and Service Awards honorees represent IU Bloomington, IU Northwest and the IU School of Medicine.

Teaching Awards
Amy Applegate, clinical professor emerita in the Maurer School of Law at IU Bloomington, will be awarded the Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award. Recipients of this recognition create learning opportunities that go beyond the classroom, engaging students in real-world experiences and hands-on engagements within their local communities.
Brenda Ganeng, Ph.D. graduate student in the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis, will be awarded the Lieber Memorial Associate Instructor Award, which recognizes young teachers who have not yet achieved faculty rank.
Maureen Rutherford, associate professor in the Department of Psychology at IU Northwest, will be awarded the Herman Frederic Lieber Memorial Award, which recognizes faculty who have proven their excellence in the classroom and beyond.
Mary Embry, teaching professor in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design at IU Bloomington, and Miranda Rodak, senior lecturer in the Kelley School of Business at IU Bloomington, will both be awarded the President’s Award for Distinguished Teaching, which recognizes faculty who represent excellence in teaching across the university’s campuses, schools and departments.
Service Awards
Jayanth Krishnan, the Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law in the Maurer School of Law at IU Bloomington, and Patrick Loehrer, Distinguished Professor in the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis, will both be awarded the John W. Ryan Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies. This award honors faculty members and librarians from all campuses for their exceptional contributions to the university’s international programs and studies.
Jon Racek, teaching professor in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design at IU Bloomington, and Howard Rosenbaum, professor in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering at IU Bloomington, will both be awarded the W. George Pinnell Award for Outstanding Service. This award recognizes faculty members and librarians who have shown exceptional breadth of involvement in service to the university, their discipline or their community.
University Honors and Awards
University Honors and Awards identifies and commemorates the achievements of those affiliated with Indiana University, including students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends. These honors demonstrate IU’s breadth and depth of excellence in research, teaching, service, philanthropy, athletics, arts, performance and other creative endeavors.
