Direct Admission

An honor for the school’s top incoming freshmen

Each year outstanding incoming freshmen are offered direct admission to the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design. As a direct admit student, you can:

  • Declare a major in the school and begin your studies at the start of your freshman year (all other students begin their studies in University Division—UD)
  • Declare a second major or a minor in your first semester
  • Work with an advisor in your major right away, rather than beginning with a UD advisor
  • Tap into other resources and support in your academic department from the very beginning of your studies

B.F.A in Studio Art

The B.F.A. in studio art is a preferred admission program. It requires a portfolio review as an additional step before you are accepted into the major. This review is usually held in the sophomore year once a student has a strong commitment to intensive study in one studio area.

You will be offered direct admission to the school if:

  • You’ve been admitted to IU Bloomington, and you indicated a major in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design on your application for admission
  • You earned an ACT composite score of at least 27 or an SAT score of at least 1280 (math and critical reading sections)
  • You earned a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7 on a 4.0 scale

If you meet these criteria, we’ll tell you that you qualify for direct admission about six weeks after you’re admitted to IU.
