In accordance with Indiana University’s ongoing response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the Miller M. Arch lecture with Doreen McCarthy has been canceled.
Doreen McCarthy’s Artist Statement:
"For many years, my work has engaged with the same set of conceptual and formal concerns: scale, perception, architecture, color, drawing, materials and the absence and presence of object-hood. The work’s evolution has followed a relatively straightforward trajectory from traditional sculptural materials to the use of man-made, non-precious materials, motivated in part by an aesthetic response to their unexpected beauty, and in part by a desire to incorporate everyday materials into an artistic language. My practice has focused on exploring questions related to the experience of the individual in space, and the relationship of an object to its surrounding environment. My sculptures act as a kind of exchange that involves contemporary understandings of shape and the luster of non-traditional materials. The mediums share a sensual effect as the lines and forms imply movement and a balance between illusion and reality. The effect of moving around the sculptures changes the way the viewer experiences elements of interior and exterior renegotiating the work in a new way. Physically shifting the scale, material and site alters the subjectivity of the viewer's experience of my sculptures oriented to the human body and beyond. The material crosses kitsch with technical execution and visual elegance expanding an awareness of the time based nature of space that resonates far beyond its origins. The work emphasizes the centrality of form that inhabits and transforms the space they occupy. Reacting with and against the gravitational force, they all deal with real and imagined space, weight and weightlessness, illusion and reality. All of these aspects converge in our experience of the works."
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The exhibition will run from April 9–May 5, 2020.
